I guess the message is that the U.S. indeed isn't a secular state?

@bnmng As someone from the outside, it looks like it is secular in theory, but in practice you have various states mandating religious textbooks and the like, so not in practice.

But stuff like this makes even 'in theory' questionable.

But as I said, just an outside observer.

@MatejLach Most of us in the United States aren't any more knowledgeable than outside observers.

In theory the federal government is secular and that shouldn't be up for debate yet we still have millions of people who call the United States a "Christian Nation". But even if everyone acknowledged the secular nature of our federal government, that wouldn't stop our politicians from choosing to swear in on a Bible to keep the public from having a meltdown.
